Flores Island Indonesia
Flores is one of the biggest islands in East Nusa Tenggara Province besides, Sumba and Timor. Portuguese gave the name Cabo das Flores that means cape of flowers. Flores also was called Nusa Nipa or snake Island. As a matter of fact, the name was said due to the shape of road in Flores Island like snake. In the period of colonialism, Portuguese traders and Dominican Missionaries arrived firstly in eastern part of Flores in Larantuka and Sikka. They expanded their influences by approaching local people in trading and religion. Due to Portuguese and Dominican Missionaries influenced, majority of people in Flores Island are catholic.
In Flores Island, there are some languages spoken or dialects namely: Manggarai, Ngadha, Nage, Keo, Ende, Lio and Lamaholot. These local dialects are used by local people as daily communication, while in formal affairs used ‘Bahasa’ as official language.
Administratively in Flores Island consists of 8 regencies; they are: west Manggarai Regency with its capital town of Labuan Bajo, Manggarai regency with its capital town of Ruteng, East Manggarai regency with its capital town of Borong, Ngada regency with its capital town of Bajawa, Nagekeo regency with its capital town of Mbay, Ende Lio regency with its capital town of Ende, Sika regency with its capital town of Maumere and East Flores with its capital town Larantuka. Most of people in Flores Island are catholic and some of them still practice traditional belief.
Flores Island is also well-known for its tourist places, one of the most impressive is Kelimutu Three color Lakes. The craters of the lake as a result of volcanic eruption. The color of the lake changed any time because of chemical dissolving in the bottom of the lake. Kelimutu located in Ende in the mid of Flores Island and the closest area to stay overnight is Moni village. You can also visit traditional houses such as Wae Rebo village in Manggarai, Bena and Luba villages in Ngada, Wolo Gai and Saga traditional villages in Ende regency. Flores Island included in ring of fire and comprises of 14 volcanoes being active. It is a pleasant adventure for travelers to do hiking in Ranaka volcano as the highest peak of 1370 m above sea level. Several tracking adventure can be done in Ebulobo, Inerie and Ranaka volcanoes.
The main economic activities in Flores Island is agriculture as majority of people’s jobs as farmers. The primary food crops can grow on this island are rice, maize, sweet potato, taro and cassava. While cash crops are clove, coffee, cashew nut, nutmeg, vanilla, candle nut.
